The UToledo alumnus is pursuing a career as an artist while working with Moder in the glass shop.Īnd doors continue to open: King recently was one of seven artists selected to make a glass key for the city of Toledo. At its most intense, Blown Away involves 10 artists and their assistants working furiously around 10 closely packed furnaces creating delicate pieces of art. “I had the opportunity to work with and meet many skilled scientific flameworkers from around the world,” King said. Over the summer, King traveled to Corning, N.Y., for a weeklong symposium with the American Scientific Glassblowing Society. “Eamon will keep the argument thriving on whether scientific glass is artistic or highly technical,” Moder said. “Compared to working as an artist in area studios the past 15 years, this adventure in precision glassware for chemistry apparatus has been a big change for me,” King said. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree from the University in 2008, he taught glassblowing and flameworking at the Toledo Museum of Art for 12 years. “The University of Toledo allowed me to create my own program through the Master of Liberal Studies Program, and I worked with Steve Moder in the Scientific Glassblowing Lab, where I learned a whole different skill set,” King said.Īs an undergraduate at UToledo, King traveled overseas to learn about Murano glass and worked with traditional Venetian artists. King then placed the individual pieces around the larger mirrors. The cool mirrors feature 100-plus glass pieces that received a reflective coating. I constructed the frames from wood floor joists that were reclaimed lumber from a renovation of a more than 100-year-old building project in downtown Toledo,” King said. “I built the frames to hold the large glass pieces for this project. In addition to being artful, King is all about recycling. “The glass skeleton had a variety of scientific pieces that Eamon was able to pull together for a beautiful, artistic, scientific sculpture.” Moder, master scientific glassblower in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who mentored King for his master’s degree project. “Eamon King is a very gifted artistic glassblower who has made huge strides in scientific glass,” said Steven D. It was obvious early on in the season when the judges kept talking about how great he was and then episode after episode his subpar pieces would win out against works that were far. The judges kept awarding wins to John Moran, whose work was utter garbage. There were many beautiful and creative pieces that ended up getting the artist sent home. Spoiler alert: I truly think that this season was rigged. The competitors this year were a nice mix of seasoned artist with decades of glass blowing behind them and younger artist with half as much experience. ![]() I can’t really assess this abbreviated performance, which is a bummer, since it was the first show I’ve seen on the new U.S. The band left the stage after the next tune, "Nightmares." "Rainfall" was a good choice for their third song. Some fled for cover, but plenty of others stayed put. Kinda.Īs the rain increased during "Hearts On Fire," this crowd was tested. "Are you with us tonight, Milwaukee?" shouted guitar player Gord Deppe. Instead, we got four songs that I've never heard before, although kudos to the soaking couple next to me singing all the words. I remember "Space Age Love Song," (1982), probably because it gets played on First Wave on Sirius XM, but their other tunes I don’t know if I’ve heard since Friday Night Videos on Channel 4. Before the show, I had to reacquaint myself with their catalog. Other than "I Ran," they really only had three other hits, all between 1982 and '84. Of course, it’s not really fair to compare A Flock Of Seagulls to New Order or Devo, and so I won’t. It's the music of my childhood, and I guess that makes me old. And, just like previous Summerfest shows I reviewed, like Howard Jones, OMD, Huey Lewis, Devo, The Go-Gos and New Order, I kind of like the "oldies" circuit. Because it didn’t start until 4:35, I got a chance for some people watching, too. I shared some laughs with strangers huddling under the beer tents. So was it worth the hassle to write this review of a one-to-three hit wonder’s Summerfest show – when they played zero of them? Honestly, I’m not even a huge fan of their biggest hit by far, "I Ran (So Far Away)," even though I love the New Wave genre as a whole. I wasn’t brokenhearted, and in fact, the rain didn’t feel horrible when it dropped the game time temperature of 94 by about 20 degrees. Spores may be numerous and are typically black and shiny, but they are rarely discernible without the aid of a microscope. The spores may persist in the soil in a dormant stage for years if plant material is not available as a food source. The fungi are members of several genera of fungi, including Pythium, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia. The spores can also be introduced into the potting medium on the surfaces of tools or pots or trays. The problem is caused by the spores of fungi that are already present in the potting soil. Seedlings may die within 18-24 hours after colonization by the pathogens. The thread-like, constricted stems are unable to support the tops of the seedlings and they fall over. Immature stem tissues have a sunken, water-soaked appearance with discolored brown to gray lesions at the soil line. (Hardening off is the process of moving plants outdoors for part of the day to gradually acclimate them to the direct sunlight, dry air and cold nights.) Young stems may be attacked just after emerging from the soil because they haven’t yet had a chance to harden off. When the failed seeds are dug up and examined, tissues inside the seed coat are rotted and lack recognizable roots or seed leaves. The fungi, attracted by fluids excreted by the plant, enter the tender young cells and dissolve their cell walls. Seeds may be attacked in the soil by the fungi right after they germinate. The death of young plants is caused by a group of soil-borne fungi, and the disease is referred to as “damping off.” Unfortunately, these situations are fairly common in the field or in the greenhouse under certain conditions. Photo: Clemson University - USDA Cooperative Extension Slide Series, Bugwood.By Steven Jakobi, Master Gardener Volunteer, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany CountyĪfter a winter of planning, preparation and expense, few things are more disappointing for the gardener than the failure of seeds to send shoots up from the soil, or watching seedlings emerge, but then suddenly wilt and die. Covering the seeds with compost or Sphagnum Moss (instead of sowing mix) may also help. Sulfur powder, or a tea of Seaweed, Garlic or Chamomile has been used to treat small areas of infection and prevent it spreading. ![]() Damping Off fungi need high humidity, so thin your seedlings promptly to prevent overcrowding, avoid overwatering (especially on cool sunless days when water doesn’t evaporate quickly) and make sure there is good ventilation and air circulation. However, if your climate dictates that you start your seedlings inside then you have a potential problem. Growing your seedlings in a well ventilated, cool greenhouse will produce far fewer problems with Damping Off. Damping Off is mostly a disease of indoor seed raising. ![]() You may lose a few plants occasionally, but so what. It shouldn’t be a big problem if you take the precautions outlined below. ![]() The best defense against Damping Off is to avoid giving it the growing conditions it needs. Fortunately such techniques aren’t really necessary for the home grower. Almost all soil contains the spores of Damping Off so commercial growers often avoid soil in their mixes, or sterilize it with heat or chemicals. Other kinds of Damping Off kill the seed before it germinates, or rot the roots, causing the tops to turn yellow and die. This type of Damping Off mainly affects very small seedlings and becomes is less of a problem as they get older and their stems get tougher. These develop shrunken black stems and eventually fall over and die, though the stem may remain upright for a while afterward. The best known type of Damping Off first manifests itself as a fuzzy whitish mold on the surface of the soil and then goes on to girdle the succulent stems of newly germinated plants. This fungus disease can be the bane of the inexperienced seed starter and comes in several guises. ![]() ![]() ![]() Samuels, without whom I could not have updated this guide for High Sierra. Unless you’re Mark Grace, 24th rounders don’t usually carve out much of a career in MLB, and Crudale isn’t exactly a huge exception. The relevant facts: Mike Crudale was selected in the 24th round of the 1999 MLB draft. So what’s so special about Mike Crudale? Let’s find out. The great thing about the Devil Magic Hall of Fame is that it doesn’t distinguish between near-Hall of Famers like Will Clark and players most people can barely remember. And this raises an interesting question for anyone with good research skills: How many other players, if any, have had at least one 5.5 WAR season or better without ever making an All-Star game or receiving a single MVP vote at any time in their career? It’s a good question, no? Either way, add the Devil Magic Hall of Fame to José Oquendo’s already impressive legacy. Oquendo didn’t receive any MVP votes nor an All-Star game nod, not this season or ever. Add in his stellar defense and he was worth 5.7 wins above replacement according to FanGraphs, which tied for 7th in the NL that season with Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. 375 on-base percentage, good for tenth in the National League, and a career-high wRC+ (117). Oquendo had a career year in 1989 when he was the primary second baseman and eclipsed 600 plate appearances for the only time in his career. This home run is under-appreciated in franchise lore as it’s buried under so many other famous postseason home runs from various Cardinals, but it’s probably something we should talk about more. But that didn’t stop him from hitting a three-run shot in Game 7 of the 1987 NLCS, which gave the Cardinals a commanding 4-0 lead early in the game, a lead they would not relinquish. Oquendo retired with only 14 career home runs, so he averaged about one home run per every 220 trips to the plate. ![]() His wRC+ with the Mets was around 45 with the Cardinals it jumped to 96. A lot of that value came from defense and his versatility (he pulled off the “play all nine positions” feat in 1987), but his hitting improved and certainly reached a level that was perfectly passable. And this is what might surprise people: During that span he was a near 3-win player per 600 plate appearances. ![]() The relevant facts: After spending the entire 1985 season with the then triple A affiliate Louisville Redbirds, Oquendo joined the big-league squad in 1986 and logged 3,173 plate appearances with the club before calling it quits after the 1995 season. The Mets decided they could do without that and he was swapped to St. 200/.200/.200 seasons to begin his career in Queens, amounting to negative 0.9 wins above replacement in only 564 plate appearances. But his career, which began with the dreaded 80s Mets, didn’t start that way. Remember when Tommy Pham had a.
